Mammad Ibrahim Sentenced to Three Years in Prison

Today in the Narimanov district court of the capital at the trial of a member of the board of the Popular Front Party Mammad Ibrahim the verdict was read. Ibrahim was sentenced to 3 years’ imprisonment.

His lawyer Yalchin Imanov told Turan the sentence read by the judge Turgay Huseynov was devoid of legal basis and distorted the testimonies of the parties.

The defense intends to file an appeal.

“We do not believe the Court of Appeal, but we have to go through all the courts to appy to the European Court,” Imanov said.

Note that during the trial all the prosecution witnesses confirmed Ibrahim’s innocence and his non-use of force against those who were consequently recognized as victims.

Ibrahim also denied the charges, saying he was being persecuted for his opposition political activities. Human rights organizations have recognized Ibrahim a political prisoner.

Ibrahim was arrested on September 30 last year on charges of disorderly conduct (Article 221.1). The complaint was filed by Mikayil Guliyev, a former member of the PFPA. Subsequently, this article has been reclassified to a heavier charge on Article 221.2.2, in which Ibrahim faced up to five years in prison.
